The farther you travel from Gangtok towards North Sikkim, the more the landscape begins to change.
Settlements become smaller. The mountain slopes appear steeper. Rivers run through deep valleys, and the road seems to have been carved into the hillside.
This is the appeal of North Sikkim.
But the region is also among the more demanding tourist circuits in the state. Its famous destinations sit at significantly different altitudes, and access depends on permits, weather and road conditions.
Before planning a North Sikkim tour, it helps to understand the difference between Lachung, Lachen, Yumthang Valley and Gurudongmar Lake.

Lachung: A Mountain Village with a Purpose
Lachung is not simply a place to spend a night before sightseeing.
It is a mountain settlement surrounded by steep slopes and the distinctive landscape of North Sikkim. For many travellers, the slow approach along the valley is as memorable as the destination itself. Most visitors stay overnight in Lachung before travelling towards Yumthang Valley.
Accommodation and facilities are more limited than in Gangtok, so visitors should choose packages based on realistic local availability rather than assume city-style amenities.

Yumthang Valley: More Than the Valley of Flowers
Yumthang is widely associated with spring blooms, but reducing it to a flower-viewing destination misses much of its character. The broad valley, surrounding mountains and changing alpine conditions are reasons to visit in their own right. During spring, flowers may appear across suitable elevations. At other times of year, the scenery can look entirely different. The excursion remains subject to road accessibility and local permission.
Zero Point: An Additional High-Altitude Excursion
Zero Point, also called Yumesamdong, lies beyond the standard Yumthang sightseeing circuit. It is not included in every Lachung package. Access depends on permission, road conditions and suitable transport. If Zero Point matters to your trip, ask the operator to identify it explicitly in the itinerary and quotation.
Lachen: The Route Towards Gurudongmar
Lachen is commonly used as the overnight base for journeys towards Gurudongmar Lake. The route involves early travel and rapid changes in altitude. Conditions become increasingly severe farther north.

Gurudongmar Lake: A Journey That Requires Preparation
Gurudongmar Lake lies at an elevation of approximately 5,400 metres. Its setting is extraordinary, but the altitude makes this a serious excursion rather than routine sightseeing. Travelers must consider their health, acclimatization, eligibility and the possibility that authorities will restrict access.
Foreign tourists are not permitted to visit Gurudongmar Lake under the official published tourist permit conditions. Do not take a high-altitude excursion merely because it appears as an attraction on a tour-package poster.
